A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn, offering futons and tatami
mats as opposed to beds. Designed for life on the floor, tables
are low and "chairs" are legless, having only backs and
seats. Many times cushions will serve the place of chairs. Tea and
hot water usually accompanies the room.
Upon arrival the futons are usually in the closets, to allow more
space in the room, but they will be brought out for the guest before
bed time, usually during dinner time when the guest is out of the
room.
